Yes, I know that the Russians have also lost cosmonauts, but these are "closer" in a sense. This is not to diminish, in any way, their sacrifices in space exploration.

I saw Apollo 1 still on the launch pad when I took a tour through Kennedy later in '67. I was listening to radio when the Challenger lifted off, and I was working on my own "space craft", the Lion's Den, when the call came from my mother about Columbia.
