I know how you feel :( Not in the SJ forum (I try to avoid forums because of all the communications problems and stress they cause) but elsewhere, the same has happened to me. I'm left with a damaged friendship because of a misquote....and no real way to back out because while the quote itself wasn't accurate, I stand by what I thought and felt.
The best thing you could probably do would be to give it and yourself time. I do highly recommend finding something that will help you deal with these situations before they reach critical mass. I've done the same thing --- let something build until I felt I had no choice but to follow through on a decision I really didn't want to make.
