747schemevariations

Someone once said that the paint scheme on the left was too much. I finally got around to updating the SJ&W's paint scheme to the New Image version on the right. This was no easy task as there is no template file for this model.

I must admit I do like the one on the right better. It is not exactly how a real 747 would be painted, but it is close. Now to paint a model 747.

This got me to thinking on how the New Image scheme got started on the railroad.
So here is the official story, as envisioned.
New Image history:
When SJ&W Air got its new 757 jets the old scheme was looking dated. So the marketing department was tasked to come up with something vibrant, but still maintained the family look. They came up with the traditional red window stripe, but now with the forward portion looking like the lower half of an arrow. Several models were painted and displayed. The new scheme was well received and approved. For the 747 the window stripe was made taller to cover the entire length of the doors, because the narrower window stripe almost was not noticeable on such a large jet.

SJ&W rail saw the models and decided to paint a few commuter F40PHs in a test scheme using the design, but with the colors reversed. The locos got a lot of favorable press and it was decided to paint the locos in the new scheme. The scheme was also tried on some hood units and it was found the scheme was easy to apply and looked great. So the New Image scheme is to be applied to all locomotives when time for repainting arrives.

Move the text on the white one forward to under the second deck windows.

Got any photos of the F40PH's? :D

One on the left is more eye catching and I like the lettering there better (which is what Smrgol suggested on the right). Have you considered tail art as is done by Frontier Airlines?

Suggestion noted, though it is actually a very light gray.

Means rescaling the text though. :=/

Not yet, but I do have drawings.

I assume you mean models and not the real things.

As for the tail art, the decision was made to keep the herald in it's traditional place, though it's not positioned correctly on the model.

Didn't realize there was a specific way for planes to be painted?

I meant that if a real SJ&W Air 747 was painted in this scheme it may not look exactly like the model as I have no way of determining measurements or the panel lines on the model. Even when I paint a 1/100 scale model it probably would not be an exact "match" for the real thing.
