I'm sitting at home typing this.

After waiting for Verizon (local phone company for those that don't know) to come and repair the Canal's phone, I decided to go home and get some sleep. I wouldn't do anyone any good if I was so tired I couldn't stay awake while operating the bridge.

I talked to Tony and he agreed. He said everything should be fine and for me to go home get some sleep and head back early today.

After following someone who would not do more than 30mph on a rainy night, I don't know if it was because it was raining, dark, or they didn't know the road, or a combination of the three, I got in at 10p and got to bed at 10:30.

When I got up I checked the weather website I use, Weather Underground, to check on the track of "Charley". It seems "he" took and eastward track and stayed off the coast. The daily/hourly reports showed that wind speeds got to no more than ~12.5 mph at Wildwood. I get higher wind speeds than that normally at Canal. :=3

So the event was a non-event, for which I am glad. I'd rather get prepped for a storm and not have it happen than to think it won't effect us/me and it take a turn for the worse.

As for the phone problem, the phone tech told me that it was an old line, a "C" block cable, that probably just wore out, and squirrels like to gnaw on it. The line does run through some trees. He switched us to a newer cable, so we wouldn't have any problems.

I asked him how old the line was. He said they were using it back in the 50's. I then asked if it was possible if that line had been there since the 40's. He said, very possibly as it is the oldest line on the poles. I then told him then it was very possible that the line was the original line to the building and was installed circa 1943!

You should've seen his eyes go wide. :=3

So if that line gave over 50 years of service, I think no-one can complain about it going bad. I just wish it wouldn't have happened when "Charley" was threatening. :=/

Except that the Law dictates it must happen in conjunction with such a potential crisis. It's been waiting since 1943 for a hurricane to come near.

You can read about it in the following Law Code:
Murphy XIII:6 §17 A ¶ 3.a.12

I hold up traffic every time I go to South Jersey just looking for where I should turn into parks and such. :) I think they should expand some of the major roads like US-322, Route 47 and Route 49. Those may have been fine 20 years ago when traffic was light but not today.
