Suburban Jungle
Oct. 20th, 2004 08:15 amNow, The Suburban Jungle is not my strip, nor do I control its content. I'm not nearly as talented as
the_gneech.
That being said, I must say what is on my mind regarding the Gneech's decision to pull his latest story arc because it is very close to another story arc another web cartoonist is doing. This other comic, as far as I know, was unheard of by the Gneech, and many of the "Jungloids" until a reader brought it up.
Well, that other comic has not been update since June or so and it doesn't look like it ever will be. Maybe it was a one shot try at a comic, as the entire run(?) was about the renegade chicken.
As for SJ, John, you have a knack of telling a story. The other strip had a "superhero" or "masked avenger" of sorts, which you do not. You have Tiffany, Leonard, and Drez, which the other strip does not. Also the way the mystery was revealed was sort of rushed, IMHO, in the other strip. I know you will take your time in revealing who the chicken is. You have already stated the authorities know it is a chicken and why he is doing it. The other strip went on the premise thst the autorities had no idea of who or why.
There are enough critical details that the two strips were concieved of totally apart from each other.
Also, you cannot be up on every other web comic that is out there. You have to spend every waking moment reading every comic to make sure that you don't accidently use another strip's arc. You know what that would leave you, most probably, a page that says:
To show you what I mean:
Predation as part of society - Kevin and Kell
Inability of a character to hunt effectively - Rudy, in the beginning, Kevin and Kell
Weddings in strip - too many to mention
Bar scenes - again, too many to mention.
ad infitinum
What I am saying is don't let one obscure strip "tell" you what you can and cannot do. Go on with the "Death Chicken of San Diego" story arc. Your talent in story telling, the SJ world and characters will make it sufficiently different enough that no one would ever accuse you of copying the other strip.
My thoughts are for you to put the strip on hold until next Monday as you re-evaluate your feelings, and, not un-importantly, those of your fans, and make a final decision then. If by next Monday you feel, in good conscience that you cannot continue the arc, fine, but don't make a rash decision.
And one other thing, you, as one other person put it, are being silly, and I'm the only one allowed to be that way regarding his decisions. :=3
Whatever you decide to do I'll respect your decision, and will support you in every way possible.

I'm sorry, but all my ideas have been used already. Thanks for reading SJ.

Date: 2004-10-20 01:21 pm (UTC)I can't seem to face up to the facts,
I'm tense and nervous and I can't relax,
This Colonel Sanders job is getting me down,
A crazy chicken chasing me all over town
A psycho chicken
(Bawk Bawk Bawk! Bawk! Bawk! BAWK! Bawk!)
Better run run run run run run run away
Oooh oh oh oh aye aye ayee
I don't know just what to do,
He's got a crudge against Frank Purdue!
He's clucking a lot, but he's not saying anything,
I plucked him once! Why pluck him again?
Psycho chicken
Qu'est Que C'est?
(Bawk Bawk Bawk! Bawk! Bawk! BAWK! Bawk!)
Better run run run run run run run away
Oooh oh oh oh aye aye ayee
Colonel Sanders wants to judge his goose,
But psycho chicken still on the loose,
They caught him down in Ohio,
They cut off his head and they put him in the oven,
They put him in a box right next to a roll,
Put some cole slaw round his legs and someone took him home,
Ate him for lunch and it tasted real fine,
But the guy who ate him, he just lost his mind!
Psycho chicken
What the Fu(BEEP)!
(Bawk Bawk Bawk! Bawk! Bawk! BAWK! Bawk!)
Better run run run run run run run away!
Anyway, Gneech, don't sweat it.

Date: 2004-10-20 02:10 pm (UTC)However, any story idea be it in comic form or written form or by an plot for a RPG, has somehow looks the same elsewhere.
You see it a lot within screen-writers that does stuff for Hollywood and Television shows. Even the WWE has done stuff that others have done.
It's all basically a big and impossible problem to deal with.
I know I read SJ myself and find it a very interesting and well thought out comic. But I am one of those silent readers, not on any of the forums or that but nonetheless.
I hope whatever happens and if it doesn't bring on too much workload for the artists etc as that takes a lot of time. I understand it a little as I never could have the time to do a written story that came out three times a day.
But I thought I give my opinion on it, not that I am saying that anyone has a wrong opinion on this. It's just that these days its very rare to find anything that hasn't been done before.
