Cup Purportedly Thrown at NBA Star Draws Insane Bids

It's said to be the cup that launched seemingly a thousand punches.
An item listed Monday on the Ebay auction site was purportedly the plastic cup thrown at Indiana Pacer Ron Artest on Friday -- setting off the biggest brawl in American sports history.

The bidding was closed Tuesday when it spiraled out of control -- with the final listed price at just under $100 million dollars.

There was no way to prove the authenticity of the cup, listed for sale by someone from Sterling Heights, Michigan.

Artest charged into the stands at the Palace of Auburn Hills after being hit by a cup, triggering a brawl between players and fans.

-------

People are willing to pay $100 million (US) for a plastic cup?!?

Look, first of all this item can't be verified. It could be cup from the concession stand that never made it to the arena floor. Heck it may not even be a cup from that arena.
Second, it is an item that started a brawl, not the Holy Grail that Jesus drank from. I hate to be cynical, but I believe that the Holy Grail wouldn't fetch that much money.

I shudder to think of what this world is coming to when they want to spend that much for a plastic cup, that has no significance in world history, but will not spend one hundredth of that in helping their fellow man.

My cynical side has long held a motto that describes this episode perfectly. Three simple words:

People. Are. Stupid.

Nuff said.

I bet the bids are as phoney as the cup.

Calmly, deep breaths.

Everyone has to believe in something as phony as a $3 bill. If they think it is what it isn't than it has to be true.

Thing is, that thing was probably stomped to a million pieces during that fracas and no one is the wiser as to what happened to it as well as a few teeth that went flying.

But, if they are that much the imbecile, than allow them to be just that. The fool and their money is soon parted and those who wish to do so will find a way of doing it. Do not stress over others being as stupid as those willing to part so readily with their cash.

Just my opinion of something that should have been taken care of by security before it got that far out of hand. This unstable and rather..*coughs* bitchy cajun will now take herself out of the fray.

Silver, you are neither unstable nor bitchy, as far as I'm concerned.

I konw of the maxim "A fool and his money are soon parted.", but this is, in my mind, beyond that.

To me it is sad that if the bids were made in good faith, then the world is truely a sad place. ;={

That is the whole of it. When you are bidding on something that is coming out of a brawl, how do you know this is the genuine article? Where are the pictures of it from that particular incident? How can it be identified other than by word of mouth.

Unless there are pictures to the fact from the game after the brawl at the scene, it is very unlikely that whoever wins the bid will get that exact cup that started it. No one thinks of this other than the fact that it was a cup that may or may not have been in the stadium at the time of the incident in question.

People can be short sighted when it comes to something as sensationalistic as sports and their stars getting into brawls while in a game. Yet, when it happens in hockey they all cheer because its part of the game itself.

We are an odd creature and it makes me wonder how we've survived so long. The lust for blood is as strong in the human animal as it is in any other beast on this home we call earth. So do not loose to much faith, it is what it is.

People are stupid, that's why.

I've been a cynic for so long now, that I know that the Holy Grail wouldn't fetch even a fraction of a fraction of what that cup had gotten. It's an insane, sad world.

Must be fake bids. After all, it can't be worth more than a 10-year-old grilled cheese sandwich with an image of the Virgin Mary on it. *rolleyes*

Sad part is, my husband just said, thats true. It would not fetch more than a hundred thousand and the religious world would stand on its ear that someone had the audacity to put it on a place such as E-bay. And it would not garner the response this did. Such a sad sad world we live in.

Remember the Virgin Mary sandwich that would up going for $28,000? Several people tried bidding the maximum of $99,999,999 but those bids were immediately cancelled by the staff.

I agree, there are some people in the world that will buy anything.

“Everyone has to believe in something as phony as a $3 bill.”

Apparently, the lady who actually tried to pass a $200 bill with President Bush’s picture on it heard your message.

Ah yes, her. That was an interesting case of insanity wasn't it?
