Differences ...
Jan. 25th, 2005 09:52 ambetween the stock Poser lion and the new Daz Millennium Big Cat series.
While the original MetaCreations lion is ok, I felt that there was something not quite "right" about it.
Here are some shots that compare some of the lions for Poser. All lions had their rear paws at the same "base" position in regard to fore and aft.
From left to right: Daz's Millennium Big Cat; a re-skin of the standard Poser lion to more "realistic" look; a "Big Face" lion that allows more facial motion and has better textures and is based on the stock Poser lion; the stock Poser lion.
From the front:

From the top:

From the right side:

The Daz lion is longer than the rest. Using a measuring "stick" I confirmed that the Daz lion is the correct length. Also the muzzle is longer in the Daz lion, which is closer to the real thing. The mouth is closer to real, with the lips going down to the "corners" and not straight back.
Notice that the Poser based lions narrow at the hip, and the front legs "splay" out when standing.
Also the texturing of the Daz lion is more realistic. The Daz lion also has more morph joints, most noticeably a "waist" between the abdomen and hip. It's ears are pose-able to a great degree, something only the "Big Face" lion, with the "Lion Jaw" option, comes close to.
So what does this mean? I'll let you decide, using a Daz lion and a "Big Face" lion walking down a set of spiral stairs.
Disclaimer, I do not know how a lion would actually walk down a set of spiral stairs, and this is my best guess on how they would do it.

The only lion that was paid for was the Daz one. The others, except for the Poser one which came with Poser 4, were free downloads.
I'm not saying that the Poser based lions are bad, but when using them in a scene with other animals, or humans, they would not accurately give the feel of the size and power of these cats.
To show you what I mean, a pic showing those same two lions rearing up with a rearing horse and standing man for comparsion:

note how the lion on the left exudes power and size, but the one on the right doesn't do quite as good as a job. With this pic you can also see how the mouthes differ.
Edited to add another pic.
