Banned!!!!
Feb. 18th, 2003 01:01 pmAt least until I log off the net and then log back on.
Here's the story.
As some of you know, I post on some of the "Nice" message boards (the entire NCD fora, Gaming Guardians, Leon & Kay and A Doemain of Our Own), using 4 different avatars (LionkingCMSL, Altaica, LD {Lion's Den}, and Don M (or me as "Player God")).
Well, when I went to reply to a thread earlier, I got the following message:

There is a slight problem there.
SNiP, my ISP, uses dynamic IP addressing for its dial-up users, which I am.
For those that don't know what that is, it is way to allow a greater number of users to use a limtied number of IP addys. So instead of assigning one IP addy for each user, you assign, temporarily, an IP number to a user when he logs on to the net, then re-assign that same number to a new user when the first signs off.
Very efficent and economical.
There lies the rub though.
Let's say "Joe Blow" logs on and creates havoc in a message board or chat room. Well the admins of the board or chat room can block IP addys to keep that same person form doing the same thing again. Now let's say Joe Blow's addy has been blocked because of his nonsense, and he logs off.
Now "John Doe", who doesn't even know Joe Blow, logs on and gets Joe Blow's old IP addy. He goes to the same places that Joe has been and finds he has been blocked, and he hasn't done anything. :={
This is what happened to me.
IP blocking, and logging, only works if the user has a "static" IP addy, as when using a DSL, Cable, or other broad band connection.
I can get a "static" IP addy for my dial-up, but it costs more per month.
Edit: I just re-checked with SNiP, and apparently I was mis-informed before. They do not offer static IP's for dial-up users. Also, I can't get DSL where I live. :={
I want my T3! :=3

About the way it is
Date: 2003-02-18 11:52 am (UTC)That is when you need to get ahold of the Admin. for that particular server and explain to them what is going on. They need to ban that particular name and not the IP addy.
About all I can suggest.
