Work & some people.
Feb. 26th, 2003 12:49 pmWell, after being I've been working for WaWa for over a month now a guess it is time for an update.
On the whole it's not too bad. One thing I do wish I could change is my schedule. I don't want to change the 10p - 7a shift, but my days I work I would like to see changed a bit.
You see I work Sun., Mon., Tues. & Thurs. nights. That one night off (Wed.) is a killer. I would rather work Sun. - Wed., or Mon - Thurs. nights, inclusive.
I have asked about getting my nights grouped together, but I was told that the other guy, who works the other three nights, doesn't want to work three consecutive nights, because of his other job. It seems he drives a truck during the day.
I can understand that, and being he has more seniority that I do, I will live with the current situtation until I leave, because of the railroad starting up.
Yes, they do know I will be leaving in the spring due to the railroad starting back up, and I have been told I will be missed.
Now to the second part of the "subject".
It seems that there is one *ahem*customer*ahem* that thinks I'm the worst gas attendant Malaga has. :=/
Why? Because I will not bend to his will and fuel his SUV the way he wants me to.
He comes in and fills up. Fine. But then he wants me to stand by his Cherokee and nurse three more gallons into it.
WRONG!!!
First of all, when he comes in it is before the second guy comes on at 5a and I'm running the fuel court by myself. I can't just let my other customers wait. Let him do it? Nope. In New Jersey there is no "self-serve". Actually, I might let him do it if he wasn't so "high & mighty" and arrogant. He feels that I am there because I'm stupid and can't find another job. That's because I have "nothing up here", meaning my mind. He has told me that.
Second of all, he is defeating a safety feature of the gas tank by filling up the "expansion" dome of the tank. That is the reaon why you should never "fill to over-flowing". It's not so bad in the winter, but in the summer the gasoline evporates, in the tank, and the vapors need some place to go. If you don't leave room in the tank, then the possibilty exists that it could force gas out the filler neck. It also puts excessive pressure on all the fuel line components, up to, and including, fuel injectors. That is the reason many owner's manuals warn you not to top off. As there are warnings on the nozzles themselves, and sometimes on the gas caps/fuel doors.
Why does he want me to put that extra three gallons in? Because, according to him, those extra 3 gallons will give him enough gas to make 2 complete round trips with out re-fueling.
Sir, if you want to make two round trips without refueling, I would suggest you get rid off that gas hog. No, I have not told him that.
I will round up to the nearest dollar, but not stand there and try to put those extra 3 gallons in. According to state law, and WaWa policy, I am, as all attendants are, supposed to hang up the nozzle when it "clicks off". In practice we try to round up to the nearest quarter or dollar. It doesn't matter where we stop it now, as we have a full cash drawer, like those inside, and if we have to make 99 cents in change, we can.
WaWa gas associates are not supposed to walk around with money in their pockets. Each sale is supposed to rung up and the money put in the till right away. In practice though, if you get busy you will end up with money in your hands until you can get the time to ring up the sales. Of course, if you need to make change you have to ring the sale up immediately, and you can't have more than two sales pending on each pump. The pumps are computerized, so any gas associate, as well as the store, can "cash out" any pump.
He, the customer, is always in a hurry and wants immediate service. The first time I served this guy I was about 30 seconds late getting to him, due to the fact I was helping my shift manager move milk around.
He had already started to fuel a gas can. I apologized for not being right there, and he accuses me of getting coffee.
Excuse me!!!!
First, he didn't know who I was. Second of all I could've been in the men's room.
The "relationship" went downhill from there.
He has now accused me of "discriminating" against him becuase I won't put that extra three gallons in his tank.
He has been advised, by my shift manager, that I'm following WaWa policy and state law. That doesn't matter, he wants those three gallons. I also told him I treat him, as far as fuleing is concerned, no different from any other customer.
He is also not happy that I shut the pump off on him once because I caught him fueling his SUV.
He has threatened to "have my job". I told him, as I took of my radio and headset and tried to hand them to him, "You want it? Here. You can have it. I'll leave and go home. I can be asleep right now."
I did that right in front of my shift manager, who basically shrugged her shoulders.
Of course that added more to his ire. I did not "quake in my boots" with fear, and it was a "slap in the face", as I basically said, "You don't frighten me".
A no point was I rude or nasty. I think that even added to his anger. Fine.
He has threatened to call the store and talk to the store manager, but no-one has heard a peep from him. More talk than action perhaps. He has also threatened that I would remember one morning, and he would "get me back".
Well, I remember each morning, and I told him so, in a pleasant, almost sing-song voice. :=3
I pity him if his life mission is now to find a way to get back at me. :=/
The latest round happened out on the fuel court, and some of my regulars were getting fuel. They have asked me, "What is that guy's problem?"
I told them and they said, "Ahh. He's a jerk. Ignore him."
I have been assured that I will not lose my job. Not that I was worried about it.
I have been told by other customers that I'm their favorite fuel guy, and one person told the fuel court manager that I'm a "keeper" and the customer is glad that I was hired. :=3
We are not supposed to take "tips", but we get them anyway. I can get anywhere from 50 cents to two dollars at any given time. One night I made eight dollars and three slices of pizza. ;=3
I also get constant offers to buy me coffee. :=3
I guess I must be a "horrible" gas attendant to get those things. ;=3
To that one *cough*person*cough* I say, get a clue/life. Not everything revolves around you. I know more about fueling than you do and I won't risk a spill, that I have to report and clean up, just to satisfy your unreasonable demands.
Oh, one last thing. He lives in Pennsylvania, where there is self-serve. Why doesn't he buy gas there, where if he pumps it all over the fuel court I couldn't care less? I guess it's too expensive for him. :=/
NJ, being a full serve state, is actually cheaper than the surrounding self-serve states.
So much for self-serve being cheaper.

All in all you're not getting that much more fuel to really affect the calculations.
At $1.499 (curretn price for reg. unleaded at our store a quarter equals .167 gallons (our pumps measure to the thousandth).
So let's say you drove 250 miles and you filled up, with regular, at our station. The gas "clicked off at $10.87 or 7.252 gallons. If I rounded up to the nearest next quarter, or $11.00, that would bring the gallonage to 7.338 gallons.
The MPG's for each, respectively, are 34.473 and 34.069. A difference of .404 mpg, less than half a mpg.
Personally, a half of a mpg, to me, is not that much of a problem. Actually, I'm looking for variances in the 5 and greater mpg fuel economy.
Now rounding it up to a whole dollar, from the very low cents range, may cause problems, as then there is almost another gallon going into the tank to affect the calculations.
As always, literally, you milage may vary. ;=3
