Yesterday a manager of mine surprised me with a question.

We had a meeting and I tiredly quipped, "I guess I won't be able to take the next weekend off for my con. Not this weekend, but next one after that."

My manager asked, 'What type of con."

My co-worker, in his thick Filipino accent said, "Fur.", but it sounded like "Fire".

The manager looked at me and asked, "Why do you want to go to a fire convention?"

I said, "Not a fire convention, but a convention for one of my interests."

My co-worker then prounced "Fur" with great clarity and the light bulb went on over the manager's head. He then turned to me and asked the question that surprised me, "You're a fur?"

I said, "Yes, as if you couldn't tell with all the lions. The convention is AnthroCon, the largest."

His next statement was, "As long as you don't wear your costume to work. Well, there is one day you can, Hallowe'en."

His attitude was matter of fact and accepting. :=3

So people may surprise you about being a fur. :=3

I mainly hide behind my girlfriend; "She's an artist and I help her bring stuff to and from conventions."

I don't think work needs to know anything about my personal life that they don't have to know. >.>

Absolutely. I've told several people at my tai chi class and aside from Sifu (who loves to tease), the vast majority of them have been entirely cool with it. Some have even been interested in learning more. Only one sidled away, having already heard some of the bad press, but he did it in an exaggerated enough manner that I think he was joking.

There's always a little trepidation when my students figure it out. I once remember [livejournal.com profile] cubecrazymonkey shouting out at a debate practice, "Mister Tora's a furry!" It was met with appreciation and glee, much to my surprise. Well, I suppose it was because the school totally buys into their mascot culture (L.C. Tigers), and I was telling them about my tiger costume...
