One of my biggest regrets is not going on the 30 day American Rail Pass back when I graduated H.S. in '76. That's 1976 not 1876 you smart @$$es. :=3
I learned to go for the gusto, but in hindsight I probably wouldn't have appreciated it as much as I do now. True, there are routes we, Amtrak, no longer have that we did back in '76, but would a 19 year old kid have as much freedom and get the privileges as I do now as an employee of Amtrak and being 50+ years old? I have to think not.
Yes, there are a lot of railroads and equipment that are no longer around, but the freedom I have with my I.D. and pass makes up for it.
