Being I haven't done any major food shopping since June, I did some today.
So, let's see how the shopping trip went.

Number of items bought: 132
Total cost: $445.89
Sales tax paid: $3.75 (on non-food items)
Total "Price Cut Savings": $16.61
Total "Preferred Savings" (Club Card): $29.86
Total savings: $46.47
Saving percentage: 9.5%
Total cost without the savings: $492.36
Average cost per item: ~$3.78 ($3.3779545454545454545454545454545)

Note that I didn't buy any "junk food" nor TV dinners. I was taught, by my mom and dad, how to shop and eat healthy. I did buy some snacks but didn't overload on them.

This doesn't include the $174 I spent on beer & wine on Friday. :=3

BTW, in June I spent over $750.00 on food, but that also included alot of staples (sugar, flour, spices) that I needed to replenish. I also have some items left from that shopping trip.

This here herbivore cooks all his own food starting with the source vegetables. Now that I'm gluten intollerant it's become more important than ever.

My fursona is an accomplished cook, something I *wish* I was. I can whip up a few simple dishes, but nothing requiring any finesse.

I average about AUD$90-120 per week for supermarket shopping - no car means I can only bring home what I can fit in my 2-wheeled trolley. Couldn't tell you what the sales tax is; in Australia the final displayed price already includes the GST (Goods and Services Tax) though it does appear in receipts.

Here, in the U.S., each state does its own sales tax, if any, and what is taxable. Delaware is notable for not having a sales tax. There is no federal tax on goods or services, other than motor vehicle fuel, IIRC.

New Jersey has a 7% sales tax on non-essential items. Food you have to prepare is non-taxable, but if you go to McD's that food is taxable. Clothing, for the most part, is non-taxable, except for sports items.

The 7% is variable. If you go to a "Urban Enterprise Zone", such as Vineland, then the tax is cut in half to 3.5%.

I could cut my food budget to what you spend if I went shopping every week, which I do not, as you can tell. :=3

You really have to come visit the lion. I can whip up some serious stir=fry of veggie soup that you would love. :=3

I'm curious now about how taxes are worked out across different states in Australia. The GST is federal (a "gift" from then Prime Minister John Howard), and home owners have to pay council rates which go into the local budget. I'm due to meet my tax agent soon so I'll ask him if he's not too hurried. I guess I could look it up on the 'net, but that would probably give me a headache.

I wish I didn't have to - this is one of the reasons I have so little spare time, and it's worse now that I have to trek all the way to Hornsby for the gluten-free vege patties that fit in with my lunch. Most unhappily the stores don't deliver outside of business hours when I'm home.

Believe me it's on the list of things I must do before I die. When my savings/share portfolio reach AUD$50k I'll look seriously at moving to Canada and once settled in I'll start to explore the continent. Right now I'm only up to $8.5k, and the lack of a pay raise this year has dealt my plans a blow. :(
