Well, I did something that I'll probably regret. I quit McDonald's. I walked out in the middle of a rush.

There is this one person, who I've written about before, who was "initiating" the orders. We had a rush and he was moving slow as molasses in the coldest part of Feb. We had four orders on the "screen" and 4 or 5 "pending". He would start one or two sandwiches, put most of the condiments on them. I would finish up the sandwich and slide them into the pick up bin. Now this works well when you are slow, but if you are in a "rush" you need to change a bit. The "finisher" should be able to slide down and put the condiments on and finish the sandwich, with the initiator just laying out the "wraps" and toasting the buns.

We were well into the rush when the manager came out and asked if we were "okay". At this point he lied and said yes, when we had 6 orders pending plus the 4 on the screen. He should've said that we needed the other side opened. I held my peace and said nothing. About 5 minutes later when I saw that we weren't making any headway, I asked if he wanted to change positions, as I could initiate faster. He said no. Five minutes after that I moved down to grab the buns and put the condiments on them. He told me to stay where I was and he would do it. I said that I wanted to speed things up to clear the board. He then told me, "Don't start with me. I don't care what you want."

I re-stated all that I wanted to do was help to get the board cleared. He repeated his comment and added, "I can't say anything to you without an argument", or something to that effect. At that point I said, "Fine! You want to run this side, you can do it by yourself! I've had it!!! I QUIT!!!"

I stalked off and found the manager and told her that I had enough. She tried to get me to stay, but I would have no part of it. First of all, if I had claws this guy would've been missing a face right then and there. Second of all I was scheduled to close with him tonight and it would've been intolerable after about 10p.

I know I basically left the crew in a lurch, but I felt it was my only choice. I am expecting a phone call from the store manager tonight, as the manager on duty was the assistant manager. If I'm lucky Lori will say I went home sick and I won't lose my job. Being the realist I am, I know that I'm probably fired and Mickey D's won't give me a good reference. :=/

If I do go back, I'll want my schedule changed so I don't have to work with him again. If the manager does call, or when I go into see her tomorrow, I will lay it on the line and tell her everything that that person has being doing that is not to McDonald's standards, and it is a laundry list. I've kept silent because I felt that it was not my place to speak up, now I have nothing to lose. Funny thing is, this person is not a "kid", he's a 30+ year old with a wife and works two jobs.

It's a shame really. I had the best interests of the store in mind, and I try to be a good worker and get along with everyone.

So tell me, what did I do wrong, other than walking out in the middle of a rush.

I don't think you did anything wrong at all. I wish that I could do that. Most of the time when I'm paired with an idiot, I end up cleaning up the mess. If I stop doing the work, we both fail. I would have stuck it out as much as I could, and THEN I would have gone into the manager. (Or call the manager over and tell them to examine the work of this particular employee. Then they would see him slack off and would merit what he deserves.)
But sometimes I can snap, but that takes a HUGE amount of abuse to do that. Even then, it has to be physical abuse for me to get back at someone.
I hope things will work out for you. If not, move on. You can probably get a part-time job like that almost anywhere.
Good Luck. Best wishes.

The only thing I see you did wrong was not doing something earlier, like requesting a shift change or discussing it with the management, or even quitting.

And it sounds like this joker had a problem somewhere.

I applaud your audacity. The lack of work ethic in this country is positively deplorable.

I had a girl I worked with when I was a temp. There were three rules in this particular somewhat cushy job...
Don't slack.
Don't make calls from the `phone there.
and Don't forget your security badge.

She did all three, plus some other things I am rather ashamed to say I got angry over.

I got her fired.

Guess I was a little mad that she was abusing the welfare system, didn't report her temp job to unemployment, drove a better car than me, gave expensive presents to her boyfriend and child, and was slowing me down.

Okay, maybe I'm *still* a little mad. ;)

Point is that it is good that you weren't full Lion, lest this guy's entrails wind up in someone's burger. :) But you were Lion enough to quit instead of quailing to his attitude like other people.

He likely doesn't like his job. He probably thinks that since he's working two jobs that this one should cut him a little slack. He's wrong for taking out his dislike of the job on his productivity, but then he'll probably never know that, and if you ever read the book Generation X, you'd know why. It's not a *good* book, per se, but it does explain my generation pretty well...McJobs and all.

Maybe this link will cheer you up a little.

I agree with Berin.
The manager should have realized that you needed help and opened up the other station.

Good luck!

Whoof! Well, good luck, buddy -- I hope it works out all right! But I know you -- this guy really had to be pushing your buttons for you to react that way. So you did the right thing! -TG
