The circus is coming to ...
Apr. 25th, 2004 07:06 pmthe CMSL!
Well at least 36 cars of the 58 car Ringling Bros. & Barnum Baily Circus' Blue Train will be headed our way.
We'll be parking the passenger section, where all the performers stay, on our tracks at Tuckahoe. They will be bussed from there to Atlantic City for their performances.
The animal and other cargo cars will be in Pleasantville, which is much closer to Atlantic City and less of a stressful move for the animals. Of course I wish the big cats would be in Tuckahoe, but oh well.
How did we pull this off? Actually we didn't. They called us to see if we had any storage space for their ~3060' ( or ~.6 mile) long train. Since we are not using the north end of our railroad yet, we said, yes, we did. The nice thing is that we have just completed a total track re-hab on that portion of the line. They came down, looked at the site and fell in love with it.
They are also putting in a well for their use, but they will turn it over to us when they are done with it, which will come in handy, as it is in the same area that we will be moving our shops to. :=3
I also talked to Tony about extending a siding about a mile or so for their use if they come back, which we hope they do. The extension won't be that hard to put in, as the track in that area was once double track, which the siding was part of. All we have to do is put in a switch, do some regrading, and relay track to the bare minimums for use. No need for 80 mph track here, as we will be only doing 10mph or so. We couldn't park them in the same place, the main, as we will have freight at that time and we can't block our interchange with Conrail.
Also when the circus isn't using it, it would give us some needed storage space for cars. Tony agreed that it might be a good idea. As it would show RB&BB that we want them back and will accommodate them as much as possible.
So the circus is coming to the CMSL, and hopefully a 1500 hp F7 and a 1750hp GP9 can move all ~3,000 tons of it. Personally, I do believe we can do it. This will be a great big feather in the CMSL's hat, as the circus doesn't run on just anybody's railroad. :=3
So, it is fitting that the "railroading lion" will be moving the circus. :=3
