I was looking to get cmfm.com and I was pointed to a company in the UK where they said that prices are in the region of US$3,250.

I filled out their "enquiry form" and told them I'd pay $15 and pointed them to godaddy.com for a look at prices over here in the real world. I also told them that $15 was "above the fair market value for domain names here in the US".

As the_gneech put it (in an AIM conversation):
gneech: Geez, what's the matter with these people? 0.o
gneech: Even at the height of dot-com stupidity here, you couldn't get that much money for nothing.

There is no way cmfm.com is worth more than $15 to me, no matter how bad I want it.

I just looked at their page after I sent the "enquiry". Here is what it said:

Well, I guess I won't be hearing from them then. :=/

You were looking in the wrong places. Should've called me and asked. I have local knowledge on cheap domain prices over here :)

Problem is that they "own" the name and I can only get it from them. :={

I have been getting them at GoDaddy.com for as low as $8.95 here, though there are other sites that are cheaper.

You know, you could contest that the owner of said .com is only owning it to make money and that since you have a legit-ment reason to have that domain you could make a case with WIPO on getting it for nothing.

Some people just buy domains and then hold them for ransom on those that wish or need to have said domain. You may actually have a case.

Not really "for nothing", as I would have to pay a minimum of $1500 for the panelist to review the case.

It would be less than the $3,250, but still way more than I'm willing to pay for it.
