This time those that try to get my personal info, by spoofing banks, have hit both of my main e-mail accounts.

This time they are saying they're "SunTrust Bank".

Two things that are funny about this:
1. SunTrust is located in Florida, among other states in the southeast U.S., and, as most of you know, by my LJ entries, my parents live down there (it looks like Ivan will miss them. Whew!).

2. As with USBank and CitiBank I've never had an account with them.

I will admit I was at first concerned that maybe my parents had opened an account with SunTrust for me, without my knowledge, but as I moused over the link I didn't see the www.suntrust url. Instead I saw an ISP number.

So this one gets reported, twice, to the proper authorities.

Keep 'em coming. I love reporting you guys to the authorities.

EDIT: I was going to send a copy to SunTrust to help them combat the spoofs. However I could find no "abuse" contact in their contact or security pages. I called them and the rep said that they get thousands of them (reports), so just delete the e-mail. Well, I do have the ftc's e-mail addy for spoof reporting, so I forwarded the e-mails to them at least.

LK I think the best way to combat getting such email is to bounce it so to them it shows up as an invalid email account. There are several programs that can do this for you. I personally use Mail Washer http://www.firetrust.com

I've been very pleased with the program and it saves me a lot of hassle with spam.

I also have MailWasher, but ...

most of those e-mails (spoofs) use an invalid e-mail of their own, so bouncing does no good.

I'll keep reporting them as I only get one or two every so often.

If I start getting them more than once every two days, or so, then I'll just bounce/delete them without doing anything else.

I did a report on phishing, among other things, for my tech class this summer. I believe the stat was that the FTC deals with 500,000 cases of successful identity theft per year. Scary, neh?
