Two questions for you techno geeks out there

1. I have a Acer Acerview 56L 15" Monitor. It seems to be blurry, as in the guns are misaligned or it needs to be focused. Is there an easy way to do either? Color is good, and otherwise it's a great monitor, but I would not want to use it for typing for any length of time. BTW, this is on my gaming (aka CMSL's proposed) computer.

2. I have a Maxtor 2.6g hard drive that I cannot get to "boot up". It sits there and makes "clicking noises" when powered up. Is there anyway to get it to boot up and see what is on the drive?

I have tried this drive in three different computers and as Master - Stand Alone, Master w/ Slave, Slave w/ Master, and Slave w/o Master.

The specs on the HD are as follows:

Model: 72004RP
HDA/Uplevel: 03A
PCBA/Upleve: 69A
Unique/Uplevel: 60A

Clicking? Well, that can mean one of two things; 1) The ball bearing is worn out or 2) the read/write arm is touching the disk. Either way, it's not a good thing, or something that can be repaired.

There is a single adjustment for focus. It's on the flyback transformer, the big, black bulky thing on the back of the board.

Best bet is to take the monitor to a TV repair shop and explain the problem. They can probably adjust it for you for less than 20 bucks. It's a simple thing to do, but dangerous stuff is all around when you do it.

I already did the adjustment.

After working around commercial 2-way radios I have a healthy respect for high voltages and a collection of plastic tuning tools. :=3

Funny thing I knew there was an adjustment, as some TV's and older monitors had either a control on the back, or a hole to fit a tuning tool in, to do it. I just forgot where it was located.

#2: No. The read circuit is toast. The drive can't read the track info on head 0. It's dead, Jim.

If you can find an identical drive (make/model), you might be able to swap the controller board and get it to work.

#2: I think the best thing to do is to take it to a drive recovery specalist, where they can go into a clean (dustless) room, take out the drive platters, shove them into a new unit, and burn CD's of the data.

If it's over $100 then I'll just live with the fact the drive is dead or try to find another Maxtor drive and do what Hikaru suggested.

LK, it's expensive and runs into thousands of dollars.

This is why people backup stuff ;) Sorry to point that out though. Even if you do replace the board, it could be the head touching the platter and if that's the case, you lose your data on the disk and nothing is going to fix that one.
