Jan. 29th, 2002 09:50 pm1. Talked to the store manager. I'm in!!! I have to talk to the D.M. tomorrow to find out when I have to go back in. I'll be on days now, so I don't have to worry about that one worker.
2. Explanations on NJ DMV/Insurance codes.
A. You need insurance on your vehicle in the State of NJ to get it registered.
B. If you are caught driving with out insurance you face a mandatory 1 year loss of license and 9 points put against your license. Compare that with being caught DUI. That is 6 months and 6 points. Something is very wrong there. I could see if you had no insurance and were in an accident. But, if like me, you were pulled over for a stupid moving violation (failure to keep right), then it should be less than DUI, not more. I mean DUI is a more serious offense. I guess if the state doesn't get thier cut they get pissed off. My lack of insurance was not thumbing my nose at the law, I merely forgot to re-new it.
C. If you have 9 points or more on your DL then you are put in the "High Risk" catergory. Hmm. It seems odd that if you have no points and you get caught without insurance they make sure you get put in the "High Risk" group. Anyway, in this group the state sets the rates and then tells an insurance company, "You get this driver, or you don't write insurance in the state." If I got insurance, then my deposit is made out to the state and then they tell me who my company is. I have no choice on company or allowed to shop around. Now, my record is not the best. Hey, the lion has a heavy paw, but when I started this mess I had 7 points. I was below the threshold for "High Risk". Add in the 9 and I'm to sixteen and well into the "High Risk" area. You lose 3 points for every year you have a valid license and don't get a ticket. At that rate, it'll take me 3 years to get below threshold level and 6 years to get a clean record. Anyone want to be a chauffeur? So this puts my premiums up through the roof. It's a no brainer as to why people drive without insurance in this state. They can't afford it. The insurance requirement is a state run scam!!!!
The NJ DMV codes and insurance codes need a serious overhaul.
This leaves me with two options.
1. Continue to drive with no insurance and no registeration for 3 years and pray I don't get stopped. (A second offense with no insurance is a mandatory 30 day jail term and a 2 year loss of license.) Yeah, like that's gonna happen (not being stopped).
2. Get down to Florida and register my car down there using my parents addy.
I'll give you two guesses which one I'm going to do and the first one doesn't count.
I'm sorry, but you don't tell someone they need something then make sure they can't afford it. The State of NJ has got to change thier Draconian ways of running the inusrance industry and thier Draconian DMV codes. Granted a DL is a privilege, not a right, but in this day and age you have to make sure the privilege is accesible to all, not just the rich.
Wise up NJ or there will no companies writing auto insurance policies sooner than you think.

Date: 2002-01-29 08:39 pm (UTC)Bloody hell that's a bit steep.
California is goofy too...
Date: 2002-01-29 09:36 pm (UTC)When you're 25 (or have nine years of driving experience) your insurance goes down by at least 1/2...good luck with your 2nd option....(from the woman who didn't technically own a car on paper until she was ALMOST 25 in order to avoid paying 2 grand a year in premiums even with a clean driving record)...MLD
Insurance sucks till you need it
Date: 2002-01-30 12:30 am (UTC)My advice to you, don't take the chance and drive without insurance. The risks are just not worth it. Besides...use that money ya make/get/styeal for insurance...who need to eat anyways? ^_-
Re: Insurance sucks till you need it
Date: 2002-01-30 04:18 am (UTC)My intent is to go to Florida and get my car registered there. I'll need insurance, and I'll take hit on the premiums, but they won't be in the $5K range.
