Mc D's and how things work out. :=3
Apr. 4th, 2002 05:32 pmWell today was supposed to be my last day at Mc D's. I had given them a written 2 week notice, but things got turned around and I'm still there.
I had told them that I needed to put more time down at the railroad, but the real reason I wanted to leave was because I was getting worn into the ground working at the grill and tired of burning my hands.
Well, a few days ago we, the store, found out that one of the maintenance men was in jail on shoplifting charges. It was in the paper, so it's public knowledge. I like doing maintenance, so I approached the manager with the idea that I could go to work as a maintenance man between 5a and 7 or 8a on whatever days they felt they needed me. This was to filter or change the shortening in the friers and general cleanup. I could do a lot in 2 hours. Well this morning I walk in and am promptly was told the other maintenance man had quit, leaving the store with none.
Well, the railroading lion saw an opening and pounced on it. I told the store manager I could work 5a to 1p on M-W-F and 5a to 8a to Tues & Thurs. I told her that being the railroad wasn't up to full steam yet, for 7 day a week operation, that my schedule was my own. She said, "Yes. That will work. Start tomorrow on your new schedule."
Now, it's not a 40hr week, and I still have to get up a 4a or so, but I'm doing that anyway. There is a pay increase for being maintenance, I get my weekends off and a steady schedule. The store manager, who didn't want to see me leave, is keeping a good worker and has a maintenance man that she knows will do the job without being watched every 5 minutes or so.
She does know that when the railroad does start 7 days a week that I'll have to cut back or stop working there altogether, but I'm getting her out of one heck of a bind right now.
