What I want to know is ...
Mar. 26th, 2005 06:43 pmwhat is up with the spelling of the word "the" as "teh".
Now, an occasional misspelling I can understand, but I see it time and time again on different forums, LJ's, and in chat.
So what is with "teh"?
I know, unless I type without looking, and the occasional "teh" gets by me, you will never see anything, written by me, with "teh" purposely subsistuted for "the", except in things like this.
I'm somewhat of a grammar "Nazi". Hey, writing a book was the best English teacher I ever had. :=3
I also hate to see people use "site" for "sight" (i.e. He was a site for sore eyes., instead of He was a sight for sore eyes.)
It also bugs me when people get then and than mixed up as well as effect and affect.
Now, I'm not saying I'm perfect, because I'm not, but, as anyone who has ever followed anything I posted will know, I go back and edit anything I've done, if I can, to eliminate typos, misspellings and wrong word usage. That's the type of person I am.
It is through, not thru as some people shorten it, proper use of language do we make ourselves better understood.

Date: 2005-03-27 12:27 am (UTC)While I am no grammar nazi, I do try to be as proper as I can be, apart from the odd typo and poorly constructed sentence. :)

Some typos needing correction
I tend to agree with you.
But folks seem to enjoy using 'teh' and 'ect' instead of 'the' and 'etc', maybe for reasons of new popular convention or hip faux rebellion
I suspect many folks have trouble with 'their' English usage when 'there' is cause to use such words 'which' sound the same but whose meanings would be-'witch' more 'than' others which do not sound the same 'then'.
there their
when win
which witch
than then
the thee
Hah Hah Hoo Hoo Hee Hee !

Date: 2005-03-27 01:06 am (UTC)It originated from a typo, kind of like the word pwn, which originates from own, which meaning is to dominate the scorebaords. Ex. "I just own3d that p4ck of nubs." Translated, that is "I just scored very high over that group of new players"
So yeah, with me i use teh when mocking leet speakers. Other than that, it comes out as only a typo, cause of typing speed.

(OK, maybe I'm wrong on this particular word - it's late and I'm tired *grin*)
It's more on the order of dropping the "u" in words like "colour" to me, rather than ignorance.
As for "teh" It's such a common typo now that a lot of people let it go with a "screw it, they know I meant to type "the".
As an aside, I've noticed the latest version of MS Word (which we use at work) actually corrects some common typos, such as "teh" AS you are typing.
This is an "OK" feature until you have to fight the program to do something that it considers "incorrect".

Mocking: PWN J00 n00b. U R TEH 5UXX0RZ!!1 LOLOLOLz!!
(Note the clever addition of multiple OLs on the end of the initial LOL, as well as the pluralizing "z" at the end, which implies that the OLs may iterate indefinitely. This somehow serves to deepen the shame of the mockee, while saving the mocker from needless typing.)

Date: 2005-03-27 12:48 pm (UTC)(I do hope you understand this is a total mockery of the 1337 generation -_- The fact that I wrote this scares me :-/. The fact that I not only know about the many usages of 'teh', but also a lot more of these bad grammar maiming techniques these people use scares me even more...)
