As many of you know I wear glasses because I'm terribly nearsighted. Many of you also know that my current glasses are about 6 years old and are in desperate need of replacement.

Well, today I went to a Pearle Vision Center to get my eyes checked, the first time in about 6 years, and to get new glasses.

First off, the optometrist on premises was an older gentleman (75 y.o. (he told me)). It seems that we have a lot in common. The father of my old optometrist taught him optometry! He also served in the Coast Guard in Cape May and had rode on the P-RSL, which the CMSL now operates! It was interesting to talk to him as we had so many things in common.

Now for the good news, my eyes have gotten better! My old prescription, for those that understand these things, was ~ -8.5 both eyes and a bit of astigmatism in my left eye. Both eyes are now -7.75 with no astigmatism. That's an improvement of .75!

He showed me the difference between the two, and it is like night and day!

He also said technically I do need bi-focals, but as I take my glasses off to read, he didn't see the need for them. I hold the book about 6" away, so it is not like I'm holding anything at arm's length. Also the eye muscle test was perfect, and the glaucoma test came up negative. :=3

So my eyes are in very good health, and the next time you see me I'll have new, smaller, glasses. The frames I picked out will just about disappear on my face, as they are smaller than the ones I wear now and they are titanium. :=3

BTW, the cost of the eye exam was $55, and the cost of the glasses $229, and that's with a 50% off the lenses!

In case you are wondering why I don't get my eyes checked more often, it's because I'm of the mind-set "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". I'm not getting headaches, double vision, nor any other eye problems. If it wasn't for the fact I need new glasses, who knows how long it would've been. :=/

The reason to get your eyes checked every year or two is to have early warning of glaucoma or degenerative eye diseases. But you don't have to get new glasses every time.

I, of course, realize this, but, as I said, I take a "laize-faire" attitude about not only my eyes, but the rest of my health issues.

Yes, I do know that it may catch up with me at some point, but oh well. :=/

That sounds like a bunch of good news there LK. Improved vision and new glasses as well. I'm glad you felt you could do that and had what sounds like a great visit with the optometrist to boot.
