Question for those familiar with cell phones...

Samsung SPH A460's to be exact.

It seems that my cell phone, bought in 2000, has developed a problem where the front mini-screen and the main screen are both blank, even when turned on.

All other functions are normal, backlight lights, calls can be made and received, vibrator works, etc.

For a while the mini-screen worked and the main screen would work when the phone was turned on, but now they are both blank. This is a source of major concern as my main phone-list is in the phone, and I can't see the numbers, and if I don't know the "speed dial" number I can't call a person.

This happened all at once, with the main screen going out, today.

Anyone have any thoughts.

All I could suggest is to get the DataPilot program that would allow you to download the numbers to your computer and upload them to a new phone. Maybe someone else has a better suggestion.

Take it in to your providor's store.

They may fix it for nothing, or let you exchange it cheaply.

Same, take it to a store that can deal with it or where you bought it. They have equipment that can back up stuff on the phone/sim card to another if you need it.

The take-home message we get is the principle of "built-in obsolescence" - no cell phone was meant to last 5 or more years. Verizon offers a "new every two" replacement program as part of most of their plans which implies that if your phone lasts more than 2 years you're on borrowed time.

I agree with t'others who said take it back to the store and have them try to recover your info, then get a new phone.
