A "Train Master" is a 2400 hp locomotive, the first of that size, built by a manufacturer that sea going furs, like yourself, know well - Fairbanks Morse. F-M's name for it was H-24-66. Here is the Wikipedia article on them: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FM_Train_Master

I put the indication first; Clear or Proceed in this case.

That signal is the equivalent of a green light on a highway: you are clear to proceed at track speed: i.e. the posted speed limit.

It would seem in either case I'm a freight runner, just like on my own model RR. Wonder why it has me outside the Northeast however. Not familiar with the signals yet so I haven't a clue on that one.

most likely signal: LOTSA blinkies meaning STOP! caution! stop again! yaaargh!

number of cars: enough to knock a buzzard off the ...

Train signaling is in the news again: comp.risks reports that red-over-yellow means different speeds depending on the train system and state you're in, thus the collision in Chicago's Union Station on 30-Nov-2007 :-(
