PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Members of Philadelphia’s Muslim community are disturbed by proposed legislation which they say attacks their faith.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations, based in Philadelphia, is upset with proposed legislation in the Pennsylvania House which would prohibit Pennsylvania courts from applying foreign laws or foreign legal doctrines in deciding cases.

Specifically, the council alleges that Islamic or “sharia” law is under attack in the measure which is sitting in the House Judiciary Committee.

Marwan Kreidie, executive director of the Philadelphia Arab-American Community Development Corporation, says he doesn’t believe the bill will go anywhere:

“This is not to make it a law. The purpose of this is an exercise in discrimination. And, simply put, it’s this — and I hate to use the word conspiracy — but there’s a conspiracy afoot here.”

Kreidie says similar laws have been introduced in other states by a small group of people whom he says have the sole intent to demonize Islam and make American Muslims a political “wedge” issue.

Does Mr. Kreidi have any sense of what he is saying? It's not a "wedge" or demonizing anyone. It is an attempt to level the playing field and make sure everyone is treated fairly under the same set of laws. The only "conspiracy" is that of extremist groups trying to convert the U.S. into their homelands, which it is not.

Muslim clerics have admitted that Sharia law is not compatible with the U.S. Constitution or laws. It is stated in Declaration of Independence "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness" and that implies equal rights under the laws of this country. If we started to apply different laws to different people then there would be anarchy. If you choose to live in the U.S. then you have to follow our laws.

If we do allow for Sharia law to be followed in this country then will the Islamic countries allow U.S. citizens to follow U.S. law and customs? I wouldn't hold your breath for that to happen. There is a hypocrisy here; We want you to allow us to do what our clerical law says, but we will not allow you the same privilege.

This nation was founded by a set of guiding principles. Only the laws of the United states of America, or its sub-divisions, should be used. Not the laws from any foreign power or that of any religion. We do have the separation of church and state and allowing for Sharia law will violate that position.

I hate to say it, but: If you don't like the way the U.S. runs itself there is nothing to stop you from leaving! If you want Sharia law, then go to a country that allows it; don't try to force it on those that don't want or need it.

Our laws only!

And to make myself absolutely clear: I am very open to what you want to believe. If you want to worship Sponge Bob Squarepants as your god, go ahead. The only caveat is that you do not try to force your beliefs on me.

It is the people that want to enforce their limited and narrow-minded views on everyone else that raises my hackles.

Yes, I know this may be dis-jointed, but I had to put my feelings down in text as quickly as possible.

If the parties to a dispute agree to have it resolved under the terms of Sharia law, courts have generally been sympathetic. The same goes for any other religious body of law, be it Catholic, Jewish, or whatever. This applies to civil proceedings, not criminal proceedings. If the terms of this religious law are repugnant, courts have the option of not blessing them.

Aye, agree...

Now if US law can keep out from other countries then I be more happy.

If a US citizen breaks law in another country they should get charged on such, etc. None of this. "You can't touch him, we deal with it."

Also anything that happens with other country citizens should be dealt in their country, not shipped off to US to face whatever there.

Not perfect but what I like to see happen as well. Way too much stuff I see these days such as US copyright laws on blurays which pretty make it a moot point having them on said disc.

Not sure how legal taht would be or if it can be used if you did copy something. Should have the copyright laws of each individual country really.
