I scored six more victories against fraudulent Copyright claims on YouTube. :=3

This time Orchard Music, WMG, BFM Digital, Quiz Group Music and INgrooves had claimed that I was possibly violating their copyright regarding Richard Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries".

In my dispute I said that "Ride of the Valkyries" was composed before copyright laws (1854), and so was in the public domain, and further more I did not use any of the sources listed for the soundtrack. So all the claimants released their claims on possible copyright violations. :=3

So this is the second time I have won against unfair copyright claims. The first time was my use of "Taps" in the tribute of my mother.

so, as I said before, you can beat back the RIAA and associated bodies with their unreasonable copyright claims, if you know what you are talking about. :=3

Streamin' Minecraft tonight at 8 PM, if you have the time to sit and watch. Asked a comic artist to give me a little shout out, and he did (look up the comic Corpse Run and look at the commentary at the bottom of the page for today). If you know of a better stream service (free, easy to use software, can just screenshot the computer screen and no max amount of viewers, where this one caps at 50), that'd be good.

Would you know if there have been any copyright incidents involving webcomics? IE if you quote something from a movie or TV series do they issue you with a cease and decist letter?

Not that I know of.

Of course it couldn't hurt to acknowledge the source.

Webcomics, IMHO, are very low on their radar and the text in the word balloons aren't searchable. Not only that, there is very little income derived from that source.

Yes. Schlock Mercenary by Howard Taylor was issued a cease and desist order by Franklin Covey for using the number 7 in conjunction with the word "Habits".

Franklin Covey, who- or what-ever he/it is, is responsible for the "7 Habits" series of books, and Howard had been including references to a fictional book called "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Pirates".

This resulted in the "The Great Retcon of 2011", where all mentions of "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Pirates" was changed to "The Seventy Maxims of Maximally Effective Mercenaries".

A further result is that all books published before the retcon are now collector's editions. =^.~=

That's exactly the sort of thing I'm worried about. I had intended to quote movies, celebrities, etc in my comic. I also have a villain character planned who wears a Ned Kelly helmet and a Drizabone - two iconic Aussie items but put together they look a bit like a steampunk Darth Vader. With Lucasfilm now owned by Disney (the company that sued a children's nursery for having Disney characters on display) I'm more than a little worried, and that's even without the Star Wars quotes I wanted to use. :(

Howard Taylor had said that Franklin Covey was particularly territorial about their copyright, but others won't be quite so, well, anal about it.

If you don't use entire sections of dialogue from the movies, you'll be able to use a "fair use" defence if it comes up.

However, Schlock Mercenary was a particularly large target for something like this because Howard has a pretty large fan-base, and makes money off the strip by selling books, dice, stickers, etc., so it's more of a threat than a small, independent strip like yours would present.

If the day ever comes that I'd go commercial with my comic or characters I'd exclude all references to external publications.

In my (planned) webcomic though there are some whole sequences that I dearly wanted to mimic. The sequence that introduces Djon Kelly (the Vader lookalike) and his slave sheep Desmond is taken from Return of the Jedi:

[Seen in the traffic control centre of the railway]
Kelly: "Where is that freighter going?"
Desmond: "Locomotive GG1, what is your manifest and destination?"
GG1: [On screen] "Pesticides and fertilizer for hydroponics plateau."
Kelly: "Does she have a valid transposed code?"
Despond: "She's an older locomotive, but her transponder's still valid. I was about to route her through."
[Kelly ponders while GG1 continues rolling slowly along the railway corridor]
Desmond: "Shall I hold her?"
Kelly: [At this point the sequence deviates from RotJ] "Yes! Bring her in for a full inspection and diagnosis!"

Mind you, it looks like one cartoonist is already flaunting it.
